"Art has the ability to help us see outside our self" Interview with Evan Miller

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CRAFT?

MY CRAFT AS A WOOD VENEER ARTIST ORIGINATED FROM THE HIGH

END MEGA-YACHT INTERIOR BUSINESS WHERE WOOD VENEER WAS

HIGHLY REGARDED. IN MY PAST WORK THE SCRAPS , SOMETIMES QUITE

LARGE, WERE SIMPLY THROWN AWAY BECAUSE THEY DID NOT MEET

“THE STANDARD.” NOW AS A WOOD VENEER ARTIST I AM ABLE TO

UTILIZE ALL PARTS OF WHAT WOOD VENEER HAS TO OFFER WITH A

INCREDIBLY HIGH YIELD FOR A SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE.

DESCRIBE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS AS AN ARTIST.

UPON DELIVERING AND INSTALLING 2 CUSTOM COMMISSIONED WOOD

VENEERED ART PANELS, WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF THE FINAL

INSTALLATION, THE CUSTOMER POINTS TO AN EMPTY WALL SAYS,

“WHAT DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD DO FOR THIS WALL HERE?” THAT

QUESTION TURNED INTO MY LARGEST COMMISSIONED ARTWORK IN

WHICH THEY ALSO SAID, “WE COMPLETELY TRUST YOU AND WHAT

YOU FEEL WOULD BE RIGHT FOR THIS SPACE, GO AHEAD.”

"Olympic Mountain Snow Melt"

WHAT INSPIRES OR MOTIVATES YOUR WORK CURRENTLY?

THE NEED TO GET MY VISIONS OUT THERE FOR THE PUBLIC TO ENJOY.

WE NEED ART TO HELP US BE INSPIRED AND TO MOTIVATE US TO BE

BETTER PEOPLE TO SOCIETY. I FEEL IT IS MY ROLL TO PARTICIPATE IN

THIS PROCESS AS BEST I CAN.

WHAT ARTISTS OR PEOPLE HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR PRACTICE?

GENERATIONS OF HISTORICAL FRENCH AND ITALIAN

MARQUERTARIANS FROM THE PAST AND OTHER FINE CLASSICAL

ARTISTS FROM THE PAST AS WELL. I CREDIT MY INITIAL MARQUETRY

TEACHINGS FROM PAUL SCHURCH.

"Sweet Dogwood 2"

AT THIS MOMENT WITH COVID-19, HOW CAN THE ARTS HELP?

I BELIEVE THAT AT THIS TIME OF COVID-19 ART HAS THE ABILITY HELP

US TO SEE OUTSIDE OUR SELVES AND INFLUENCE PEOPLES HAPPINESS.

HOW HAS THIS SITUATION HIT YOUR CRAFT AND HOW CAN WE HELP

YOU?

THIS SITUATION HAS MADE ALL SALES OF MY ARTWORK COME TO AN

ABRUPT HALT. I HAVE MOST OF THE NEEDED SUPPLIES TO CREATE, YET

THAT CHANGES AS TIME GOES ON. BILLS COME IN WITHOUT

ANYTHING COMING IN TO PAY THEM. HAVING AN AVENUE TO GET MY

WORK OUT TO BE PURCHASED IS MY MAIN GOAL ALONG SIDE

CREATING.

"Pepperwood Burl and Copper Leaf.”

POST COVID-19, WHAT DO YOU HOPE CHANGES? WHAT ROLE DO YOU

THINK THE ARTS MIGHT PLAY?

BEFORE COVID-19 PEOPLE WOULD GO OUT AND VIEW AND PURCHASE

ART, NOW I THINK THERE WILL BE TOO MUCH FEAR TO DO SO AFTER IT

SUBSIDES. IT WILL TAKE A GREAT DEAL OF TIME TO WHERE PEOPLE FEEL

COMFORTABLE TO SPEND MONEY ON THE ARTS. ART NOW AND AFTER

COVID-19 HAS THE ABILITY TO EASE OUR TENSION AND STRESS LEVELS.

NOW AND IN THE FUTURE I THINK THE ARTS WILL DEFINITELY BRING

US ALL TOGETHER AND HELP US SHARE IN OUR COLLECTIVE

RESPONSIBILITY TO EACH OTHER.

WHAT IS ONE CREATIVE PRACTICE FOR ANY LEVEL ARTIST THAT YOU

RECOMMEND FOR OUR READERS AT THIS TIME? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND

MAKING THE TIME TO GET OUT IN NATURE. TO SPEND TIME EACH DAY

AMONGST NATURE ALLOWS ME TO BE SETTLED ENOUGH TO CREATE

MY ARTWORK WITH VIGOR.

"Spring Migration"

WHAT WERE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO THAT YOU’RE NO

LONGER WORRIED ABOUT NOW?

I’M NO LONGER CONCERNED WITH "CAN I STILL CREATE DURING THIS TIME?" IF ANYTHING I AM EVEN MORE INVIGORATED TO CREATE!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WISH TO ADD?

FINDING A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO BUY MY ART RIGHT NOW IS ESSENTIAL . IF NOT DIRECT PURCHASES, DONATIONS ARE ALSO KEY TO MY FUTURE AS AN ARTIST.

CAN PEOPLE CONNECT WITH YOU? FIND YOUR WORK?
